Aretha is #1 - ya got that right! I practically bawled my eyes out over her rendition of "Oh Christmas Tree". How can anyone do that? She can. As for the rest of the list...I don't know. I would think that a great singer is one who has a distinctive voice and who can easily invoke emotion in the listener. The song can be great, but it's the singer who makes the song unforgettable. I think some of voters confused songwriters with singers. John Lennon was a miraculous songwriter. But a top 10 singer? I don't agree.
As I read some of the comments, I agree that leaving Frank Sinatra off the list is a cardinal sin and that leaving Chris Cornell off entirely is not cool. I don't think Axl Rose is worthy of the list. And yes, Christina Aguilera is a great singer, but she's modeled herself after Mariah Carey, so by my definition, she shouldn't be on the list. Although, she does have more of an emotional side to Carey's technical side, but still. One or the other. Two people twirling their fingers while hitting high notes is one two many on this list. And although I like Stevie Nicks, I I really don't care for her voice. That uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh vibratto. If she didn't have that, I'd love her music even more. Here's the complete list:
