Unforgiven - Metallica

Have you ever had one of those times where, after listening for years to a song that you like, one day the lyrics actually click and you feel them stronger than ever? Thanks to a down day, I finally connected with the lyrics of this song...and now The Unforgiven acts as a reminder to remember what's important in my life. That my life in itself is most important, not someone else's. Deep, man. Yeah. ;)

How I spent my Rhapsody Freebies

OK, you get 25 free plays on the non-paying version of Rhapsody. This month, I conveniently listened to 2 full length albums with my 25:

Rihanna - Rated R
Actually spent: 13. Should have spent: 3.5

The hands down best song - Russian Roulette - which is why that one is playing on the radio. Spooky, haunting start. Hate the gunshot in the end - thankfully is omitted on radio play.

Oopsie - did I give that one away? Still worth the listen.

Rude Boy - just a fun nasty song :)

G4L - only for the first line: I lick the gun afterwards cuz revenge is sweet.

The Last Song - I guess I like Rihanna for her ballads...and super clubbie songs, of which I don't think Rated R contains any.

John Mayer - Battle Studies
Actually spent: 12 (well, its 11 songs, but I had to restart)
Good listen!
His albums are kind of like a warm blankie. Comfy and soothing, no matter what the content. By the time the fifth song came on I was thinking OK John, we get it, you don't want a commitment!

Faves: All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye (chorus), Assassin (lyrics), Crossroads (funky sounding geeetar)

R.I.P. Michael Jackson

Wow...it definitely shocked me. The King of Pop died yesterday, just 50 years old. The generation (or two) after me will unfortunately only remember the tragic side of Michael Jackson, but for me, I was an 11-year-old who's first "cassette" purchase was none other than Michael Jackson's Thriller. That's what I remember - and that's what will never forget. My best friend and I were PSYCHOTIC over this album! We studied the album cover and liner notes. I still remember the inside picture of him petting a tiger cub and I noticed the bones sticking out of his wrist in an oddly cool manner. I don't know...strange, but true.

My friend and I would argue whether he was singing about her or me while he argued with Paul McCartney in the song "The Girl Is Mine." We would imagine he was talking to us when he sang my all time favorite song, "P.Y.T." That's Pretty Young Thing for those who don't know. I lived with my walkman headphones on my ears - which will probably contribute to my hearing loss in the near future - blasting "Wanna Be Starting Something". Listening through the headphones you heard him sneak in and whisper "you're a vegetable" and you were like "Ooh! Where'd that come from?!" And those are just the songs that people DON'T know right off the bat. Beat It, Billie Jean, Thriller, etc. were the songs AND videos that defined pop culture. It was what made MTV, well, MTV! And let's not get started on how I translated "We Are The World" onto sheet music, sounding it out with my flute. These are just timeless memories that will never fade for me.

There are countless artists out there who are trying to fill that Michael Jackson mold - but they never will. The MJ phenomenon was quite possibly the last huge pop culture breakthough that could occur. No one will come close. He was the last MEGASTAR. The one before him was Elvis. And just as my family went out and got the next day's newspapers to create a time capsule to commemorate the loss of that legend in 1977, I went out and got mine so I could show my children that real performers and entertainers existed at one time. Rest in Peace, Michael Jackson.

Musical Bitchslap

So my beloved wheel o cheese shuffled me "Cry Me A River" by Justin Timberlake. That got me thinking...

What are the odds of a musical bitchslap coming from either Rihanna or Chris Brown when the dust settles??? Who will be victorious? Who will take the fall? Right now, it seems obvious, but ya never know. As I said before, I just hope everyone turns out OK. But just imagine...

We'd have a send off a la JT with the help of Timbaland with the most spectacular kiss off song...and video...EVER. Then we'd have the "oh I'm sorry" song but was really the "I'm announcing my departure from the music world as I have a meltdown" video response a la Britney's "Everytime".

Don't know if there's a right and wrong party, because when it comes to fall outs, it takes two (Rob Base, anyone?), and I don't know who would assume either role, but it would be cool to at least get some good music out of it.

Watch Cry Me A River.
Watch Everytime.
